During World War One, Canada used wartime media as a way to spread propaganda and promote and sell the Canadian war effort. The main forms of communication were posters, newspaper and music. The media was used to promote the recruitment and enlistment of men into the Canadian armed forces, rationing of food and other goods, buying war and victory bonds, contributing to the Canadian Victory Loan, and to encourage the Canadian general public to help the overall war effort. Media often enhanced Canadian patriotism as well, and it was used to gain the support of Canadian people as a way to maintain Canada's role in World War One. Censorship policies were also put in place to safeguard the public and prevent protests against the war effort. Overall, the purpose was to keep Canadians engaged and contributing towards the war effort, which in turn helped the Allies win the war.
